L’Oreal False Lash Superstar XFiber mascara is new at the drugstore and it promises to give the ‘ultimate false lash look’ without going through the struggles of applying fake lashes or getting eyelash extensions. It is said to give impressive length and volume and to be very buildable. But then again most brands tend to exaggerate the description of their new mascara in hopes to attract their customers. Nonetheless, I still decided to get this mascara and try it out as I wanted to see if a fiber mascara is any better than a regular one. And after using it for a couple weeks I think I finally gathered all the thoughts I need to give you my review on it.
Let’s start with retail prices and where you can find it. Being a drugstore brand it goes without saying that L’oreal is pretty affordable, however it was rather surprising to see that the price of the L’Oreal False Lash Superstar XFiber is very different at the two main drugstores in the UK: £7.99 at Boots* is the best price you can find, while at Superdrug it retails for £10.99! Why the big price difference? I don’t know, especially since the two usually have the same prices on cosmetics. I bought mine at Superdrug, but now looking at it I should of just looked on Boots’ website first!
And now let’s talk about what everyone is interested in, what it does and how it performs.
As you can see in the pictures, the L’Oreal False Lash Superstar XFiber mascara comes in a dual sided tube, on one side you have your regular mascara, or what they call a primer/base, and on the other side you have the fibers which are supposed to give you the dramatic false lash-like look.
I think that the Step 1 part (i.e. the normal mascara) could be pretty good on its own. The formula is not too wet so it doesn’t make a mess when you apply it, but it’s not dry either, which allows me to build it up to my liking. The wand is hourglass shaped, thinner in the middle and thicker at the edges and it actually works pretty well for coating all of my lashes and giving me volume. In fairness, I’ve only worn this mascara to work and as I am not supposed to wear much makeup, I only apply one coat of each side of the L’Oreal False Lash Superstar XFiber. However if you’re not a fan of the fibers and use it just as a regular mascara, I think in two coats it could match up to my Too Faced Better than Sex (last year’s favorite) or one of my Benefit mascaras – of course I have yet to test this theory, but I think it has the potential to do so.
As for the Step 2, I always thought fibers would be annoying and irritating during the day (see this post for referece). But I was actually pleasantly surprised to see that I can wear it for 14+ hours without my eyes getting irritated or having fibers fall all over my face. On the contrary, the L’Oreal False Lash Superstar XFiber mascara stays put and is long wearing. After 8 hours it still looks as good as when I first applied it, and at the end of a regular day (14+ hours) I have little to no smudging/transfer and maybe only a couple small fibers on my cheek. They are barely noticeable, and after 12 hour shifts in a factory I don’t expect to come out looking like an Instagram makeup artist anyway, so in my opinion this mascara wears a lot better than some others I’ve tried. However I feel like in one application there aren’t a lot of fibers actually deposited on the lashes.
As I mentioned earlier, I only got to wearing 1 coat of each side at the time. But to my surprise I think I would be fine with that on a normal day when I am not at work – I usually prefer 2+ coats of mascara but I think this does the trick. By no means do I get false looking lashes: L’Oreal actually recommends applying between 3 to 5 coats of the base and fibers to get the most dramatic results, which is a little over the top. I see a point, as only one coat of fibers doesn’t feel like it’s actually depositing much, but 5 coats? Nobody has time for that. However I do really enjoy the results. I feel like my lashes get great volume and length from the L’Oreal False Lash Superstar XFiber mascara, maybe even get a little bit of a curl, and my lashes don’t clump up too much (not like I would terribly mind that anyway). Have a look at the picture below, where I applied the base, then the fibers on my natural lashes (i.e. not curled or anything else). I love the results.
I will come back and update this post when I get the chance to wear 2 or more coats, see if that makes a dramatic improvement, but for now let’s conclude this review by saying I think the new L’Oreal False Lash Superstar XFiber is a pretty awesome mascara. In my opinion it’s worth a try if you’re on the market for something new, different and that can give your lashes lots of drama. It’s comfortable to wear and lasts for long which gets a big thumbs up from me, and if you can find a deal on it or do some research before you buy it’s actually pretty affordable too.
Update: I have tried on 3 coats of the L’oreal False Lash Superstar XFiber macara while in holiday, and the results were pretty good. I actually ended up skipping false eyelashes for the day! I feel like my lashes get more curled with each coat, and they get pretty long and voluminous. But at the same time 3 coats were a bit clumpy. I don’t mind that effect, but I know some people aren’t biggest fan of spidery lashes. See the selfie below for reference, though on the bottom lashes I only did 1 coat.
Have you tried the L’Oreal False Lash Superstar XFiber mascara? Would you? Let me know what you think! 🙂
Until next time…
