I am always on the hunt for a good mascara. A good and affordable mascara. When I saw Rimmel has a new mascara, called Wonderfully Real, I thought I would give it a go. Yeah, I may have found my favorite mascara, the False Lash Superstar by L’oreal, but I am curious, you know. What if this one is better? Or more dramatic? So on, so on. Normal questions that go through every makeup junkie’s head. In reality, I was just on a money spending whim.
I have to admit, it’s been almost 2 years since I last tried a Rimmel mascara. And funny enough, the last one I tried was the Wonderful Wake Me Up mascara, which I didn’t like. However, Rimmel London has some great products that I love. I actually enjoy some of their products so much, that they are always in my travel makeup bag. So you know, I figured I can give this mascara a go. Just because the previous Wonder’ful mascara was crap, it doesn’t mean that this is going to be the same, right?
You can get the Rimmel London Wonder’fully Real mascara for £7.99 at Superdrug* or Boots. That is a pretty normal price for Rimmel products, however drugstores often have a 3 for 2 or buy 1 get 2nd half price offer, so you can save some money.
After using the Wonderfully Real mascara for a month, I finally gathered all my thoughts on it. Here is the thing. I like it, BUT there is a big but. I think the claims for this mascara are a little high. But then again, I think we tend to see that with almost every drugstore mascara. So let’s see what they say and what I think about it.
They say the wand is easy to control and it’s supposed to coat each lash. I like the brush. It’s spiky, flexible, not too small, but small enough to get these tiny inner corner lashes. If you look really close though, you can barely tell there are any fibers on the bristles.
They say the formula is rich and creamy, and it is. So here is where my issue begins. Rimmel used the words ‘smudge-proof’ and ‘clump free’. If you only apply one coat and wipe off the excess product off the wand before applying it on your lashes, it might be clump free. I, however, ain’t got no time to wipe off the excess product off my brush. I just go in straight on my lashes, and I also apply two coats. So it clumps. Sometimes less, other times more, depends on how careful I am with it. Yes, it gives my lashes length. And I love that. I always feel like I lean more towards lengthening mascaras than I do towards voluminous ones.
Also, the formula transfers when you first apply it. If you are not careful enough, it will get on your eyelids. If you don’t let it dry enough before using a setting spray, it will smudge under your eyes. And, if you have watery eyes, the outer corners of your eyes might look a bit black.
Black… oh yes. I like that the formula is very black and intense. That’s what I’m looking for in a mascara. Another thing I am looking for is length. And I love what this baby does for my lower lashes. I know I said this in the past about other mascaras, but I mean have a look for yourself. Yeah, they clump up so they don’t look their fullest, but they are so long and intense, they really stand out.
Lastly, let’s talk about wear time. I feel like it lasts well, but as I said earlier if your eyes are watery it will smudge. Another thing that happens from time to time is it ends up flaking and falling on my skin. I would say it’s the small fibers that I can’t even see on the brush or when I apply it to my lashes. However, it stays on really well on the lashes. It’s actually a mission to remove it. It must be because the formula is so black, I noticed straight away that it takes more time and more rubbing to remove compared to my other mascaras.
All in all, I would say that this mascara is a 50/50 for me. There are things I really love, such as the length it gives me, how black it is or how well it works for my bottom lashes. But there are also downsides. I don’t regret buying it, but I don’t think I’m going to repurchase. I might just stick to my L’oreal False Lash Superstar instead. You know what I really like doing though? Apply a separating mascara first then use the Rimmel Wonderfully Real for the 2nd coat. I feel like it gives a little more va-va-voom.
Have you tried the Rimmel London Wonderfully Real mascara? What do you think about it? If not, do you think about giving it a shot? What is your holy grail mascara? 🙂
Until next time…
